What is Aktiia?

Aktiia is a 24/7 blood pressure monitoring system that measures your blood pressure, automatically, while you go about your daily life, uninterrupted.

This system consists of a bracelet and a cuff. The bracelet is a wearable blood pressure monitor that optically measures your blood pressure over 70 times per week. The cuff is used for the initial setting of the bracelet.

Growing startup

At the time I joined, Aktiia was a growing startup. Rapid hiring was in progress and the Product team was just created. Justin Ziccardi as VP of Product and I were the first members.

To start metric-driven decisions, Justin set up the initial NPS survey launch. Close to a month later, we had our first NPS score in front of us. It wasn’t great, the score was 4. We realized we will need to do a lot to reach a target of 40 by the end of the year.

Net promoter score (NPS) is a widely used market research metric that is based on a single survey question asking respondents to rate the likelihood that they would recommend a company, product, or service to a friend or colleague.

The first set of challenges

Together with the score, NPS surveys also provided us with the reasoning behind the score. These reasons gave us a long list of things to improve. However, there were 3 with the highest potential to positively influence NPS. Among them, a new feature request was showing up. People were keen to be able to do on-demand blood pressure measurements.

Starting the project

The best way to start a project is to do research. To understand what device is the best for on-demand measurements I had to start from within the company. Feedback was clear that the cuff is the right device to do on-demand measurement.

After learning what are the key recommendations for doing a cuff blood pressure measurement, Justin and I created a user journey map which led us to a few problems to solve.
